Le King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center annonce le lancement d’un service de pharmacogénomique clinique innovant

Une plus grande efficacité des médicaments combinée à une sécurité accrue des patients

RIYADH, Arabie saoudite, 25 oct.

The farmers were also trained on the use of pollination equipment in fruit and vegetable farms for effective crop yield and increase in fruit and vegetable production.

The Director, Federal Department of Agriculture, Abubakar Abdullahi, said the training was meant to guide farmers on the best practice to manage bee collonies, which serve as agent of pollination service in crop yield.

Abdullahi spoke on Wednesday at a one-day workshop in Abeokuta.

He was represented at the training by the Deputy Director, Horticulture, Mrs Omotosho Agbani.

He said that the capacity development for the farmers was a key component activity towards achieving the goal of food and nutrition security and import substitution of the Federal Government.

He described honeybee as one of the most economically important insects in agricultural economy that renders pollination services, producing honey and other hive products.

He said that honeybees, which are small but mighty creature, play an indispensable role in pollination that directly impacts our food systems, biodiversity, enhancing sustainable livelihood and overall environmental health.

“Proper pollination, via bees activities, improves the quantity and quality of fruits, vegetables, nuts, oil and other crops it also produces.

“This leads to the promotion of honeybee pollination service value chain in order to aid increase in yield and quality of crops of our farmers,” Abdullahi said.

Also speaking, the Ogun coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mrs Patience Ayo-Ajayi, said that bee farmers play a vital role in the lives of so many people in terms of production of quality honey in place of artificial sugar and also bee products.

Ayo-Ajayi also spoke on the importance of honeybee pollination in agriculture, saying that bee pollination has played a successful role on crops, particularly on fruits and vegetables crops, which help the crops to flourish and yield bountifully.

According to her, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has made food security a major agenda that must be achieved.

She, therefore, described the training as being in line with the food security agenda of the present administration.

She urged the participants to seize the opportunity offered by the training to ensure they apply all they were taught in their farming practices to ensure a brighter and more productive future of fruit and vegetable and also increase their incomes.

The Chairman Federation of Beekeepers Association of Nigeria, Mr Elijah Asade, in Ogun, commended the federal government for building their capacity on honeybee queen rearing and pollination service.

Asade said that the training would help to boost production and increase the income of the farmers.

“The honeybee queen rearing and pollination service is one training we have been eager to learn.

“This is the right time for us to key into it because a lot of us don’t practice it.

“We only practice the conventional way of rearing bees,” he said.

He admonished his fellow members to key into the training and reflect it on their farmland.

He promised that they would make proper use of the skills and knowledge gathered at the training to boost food production and security in the country.

The resource person, Mr Samuel Agboola, said the purpose of the training was to enable beekeepers to use honeybee to achieve the success in agricultural economy, through bee pollination of crops.

Abgboola further spoke on the importance of bee pollination to crops.

He defined honeybee queen rearing as the controlled process of raising queen bees from selected larvae.

He explained that effective bee pollination on crops would result in healthier crops, larger yield and higher quality produce.

He said that most fruit crops and vegetables depend on bee pollination for survival and fruitful yield.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mr Oreyemi Adenola and Mr Lateef Sanni, thanked the federal government for the training.

They described the training as an eye-opener and promised to effectively make use of all they learnt to make impact on their farms.

Senate calls for upgrade of Maiduguri Airport to international standard

The Senate has urged the Ministry of Aviation to immediately begin process of upgrading the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport for international operations.

The senate resolution followed the consideration and adoption of a motion on the need to upgrade the airport to begin international operations, at plenary on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the motion was sponsored by Sen. Ali Ndume (APC-Borno) and co-sponsored by eight other senators.

Ndume, in his lead debate, underscored the importance of airport infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth foreign direct investments and socio-economic development.

He stressed the urgent need to upgrade the airport to an internationally-operated facility in the North-East, with equipments like the international runways and tarmacs, among others.

The senator noted that among all the six geo-political zones of the country, only the North East has no international airport.

According to him, given the fact that Borno has borders with three countries: namely Chad, Cameroun and Niger, the presence of an international airport would enhance efficient and effective movement of goods and people from Nigeria and across the world.

This, he said, would further help in reducing excess pressure on the road and infrastructure within the zone.

Ndume said that the total land area of Maiduguri airport could conveniently accommodate a standard international airport, thereby propelling the tourism sector.

He further stated that if upgraded, the airport would provide a communication link which, he said, was vital among the various groups within the region.

The senator also said that the upgrade of the airport would attract foreign investments, enhance economic development, improve quality of life of the people of the zone and increase the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

In its resolution, the senate mandated its committee on aviation to follow up and report back within eight weeks. (NAN)

Federal, State Governments to implement programmes for rural women

The Federal and State Governments are to implement programmes targeted at advancing the rights and economical status of rural women nationwide.

Uju Ohaneye, Minister of Women Affairs said this on Wednesday at a one-day strategic meeting with all state commissioners for women affairs in Abuja.

Ohanenye said government would use the bottom-to-top approach for all target interventions to ensure the empowerment and poverty alleviation projects impacted on grassroots women, girls and children.

She said strategies would be employed for the betterment of rural dwellers, especially poor Nigerian women and children, since the previous ways of doing things has not yielded desired impacts and results.

“It is time for us to change the narrative, we don’t identify what we need rather we copy and paste anything that works for Western world.

“Identify the issue we have and stop copying the Western style. It’s a shame we send our children overseas because we fail to build our nation.

“That is why I call all commissioners to change the way we work in order to see results in six months,” the minister said.

She said all empowerment interventions meant for poor Nigerian women and children, including those coming from donor organisations, must be directed at the poor who are found at the grassroots.

The minister added that four steps rice milling machine that produce 10 bags of rice in an hour would be distributed to women farmers in rural areas.

The minister also disclosed that plans are on to empower women with tricycles (Pink Riders) in order to enhance their economic status.

Ms Beatrice Eyong, UNWomen and ECOWAS Country Representative to Nigeria, reiterated their commitment towards reinventing intervention to the grassroots through its technical support in partnership with the government of Canada.

She said: “The achievement of gender equality and protection of women’s rights is critical if Nigeria is to attain the SDGs targets. “Gender equality means that women and men have equal opportunities, rights and responsibilities in all spheres of life.

”It means that women and men can equally contribute to and benefit from the development of our nation.

“Along this line, the Ministry of Women Affairs is a vital institution in the society, working tirelessly to ensure that gender equality becomes a reality.”

Ibrahim Sesay, Chief Child Protection Officer of UNICEF, said the meeting was an avenue for unified effort to support government efforts in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal number five.

“The minister, while she was at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), was championing the cause of women in Nigeria and for the entire continent.

“She was advancing important interventions among which women empowerment not just by word of mouth and also narrating the key contributions of the government under His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu,” she said.

Also, Dr Ini Adiakpan, speaking on behalf of the states’ Commissioners of Women Affairs, Dean of Commissioners, noted that the states would partner with the federal government for the attainment of key targets and policies.

She said: “We want the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to continue to interface with us so that we can synchronise our own practice with what the ministry does.

“Truly we are very happy that you came to see us and you immediately went into action to implement this and we see that this is a step in the right direction and we know that with this, our capacity will be felt.”

Dr Asabe Vilita-Bashir, Director General of Maryam Babaginda National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD), lamented that less than one per cent of the nation’s budget was allocated to the Ministry of Women Affairs that cares for 70 per cent of over 200 million Nigerian population. (NAN)

AfCFTA implementation: Framework on structured, sustainable initiations deployed – BPSR boss

Mr Dasaki Arabi, Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), says the bureau has developed a framework for citizens’ engagement on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.

Arabi said this in his Keynote Address at a workshop organised by the bureau and the Secretariat of the National Action Committee on the implementation of AfCFTA, on Wednesday in Lagos.

The theme of the workshop is “Working Together for Nigeria Success under the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement”.

Arabi said that the framework would provide platforms for structured and sustainable initiations for the implementation of AfCFTA agreement.

He said the platform would help in reviewing government policies, programmes and interventions to create an enabling environment for businesses as well as cocreation between the public and private sectors.

He also said that the bureau, accordingly, conducted impact assessment on administrative bottlenecks on the ease of doing business in Nigeria.

According to him, findings from the survey and recommendations based on the assessment were forwarded to the Federal Government as policy briefs for implementation.

He explained that the policy brief would help to strengthen private participation in businesses in Nigeria, adding that some administrative manuals were already published.

He said these include “Understanding the Ease of Doing Business in nigeria” and “Tackling Youth Unemployment” to help translate and communicate government reform priorities.

He said the bureau, as a central agency of the Federal Government, mandated to initiate, coordinate, monitor and evaluate implementation of reform programmes and policies across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Arabi said that the bureau had conducted research on implementing the AfCFTA project, presented best practice models to be embarked on and which takes into cognisance findings arising.

According to him, this, through systemic administrative procedures and engagement with citizens, indicates low-level of awareness of AfCFTA amongst Nigerians and its inherent benefits towards fostering growth and economy integration.

Arabi expressed concerns of the need to unlock the development of the Small, Medium Enterprises(SMEs), emerging markets and accounting for the creation of job of over 80 per cent in Africa.

He recalled that the bureau in 2020 conducted a workshop, to address the administrative bottle-necks facing the accessibility of interventions to SMEs by the relevant government agencies.

He noted that the workshop was due to the growing need to ensure the SMEs development after the Endsars Riot and the Presidential directives to uplift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

According to him, findings were made and policy brief submitted to the federal government for implementation.

The director-general also explained that the objectives of the new Hope Agenda by President Bola Tinubu, was founded in the philosophy to modernise and expand infrastructure.

Arabi said these efforts would also help to harness emerging sectors such as the digital economy, entertainment, culture and tourism and others towards laying a solid economic foundation.

He said conference was apt and the theme was strategic toward driving the realisation and success of the implementation efforts by various stakeholders.

He said: “AFCTA is important, not only to Nigeria, but to the entire African continent; the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in Nigeria requires a collaborative effort by relevant stakeholders to ensure that trade potentials are fully harnessed,

“To understand the complexities inherent in implementing such a transformative trade as AfCFTA, this conference is carefully designed to provide a platform to appraise the existing institutional framework towards the implementation of AFCTA, in line with the roles of the key stakeholders

“Similarly, it is imperative that we appraise the key elements, benefits, challenges, and the crucial roles of relevant public institutions in making the vision of promoting intra-African trade a reality.

“Undoubtedly, some significant gains have been recorded since the implementation of AfCFTA, especially in the areas of negotiation on protocol on trade in goods and services.

“Other gains are settlement of trade disputes under phase I, while the 247 and phase lll comprising negotiations on investment, competition policy, property rights, e-commerce, as well as matters relating to gender and youths are currently on-going.”

He enjoined all participants to contribute and make meaningful contributions toward fostering the successful implementation of AfCFTA in Nigeria.

Arabi maintained that the role of the private sector was key to the implementation of AfCFTA, saying the reason the engagement with the sector is inevitable.

Also, Mr Olusola Obadimu, Director-General, Nigerian Association of Commerce, Industry Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), hanked the Director-General of BPSR and the organising committee for successful workshop.

Obadimu said the aim of the conference was to examine the key elements of AfCFTA, review potential benefits and challenges, discuss the role of the private sector in its implementation and proffer ways toward the implementation strategy.

The NACCIMA boss, who applauded the choice of the theme, noted that the topic was relevant in view of the current Nigerian business landscape and environment, considering the commencement of ACFTA Agreement.

Obadimu stressed that AfCFTA agreement would provide a huge opportunity for Nigeria’s economic prosperity, especially by providing larger market access, free movement of labour, goods, services and capital.

He said the agreement would also motivate Nigerian SMEs to expand their businesses to other African countries and foster business growth.

According to him, the agreement will also increase SMEs’ profits and contribute substantially to the development of the manufacturing sector.

Obadimu highlighted the benefits of AfCFTA to include increasing job opportunities and the demand for labour.

He, therefore, said AfCFTA would reduce unemployment and create an opportunity for Nigerian professionals to seek employment in other African countries.

“Overall, the AfCFTA Agreement is projected to create over 13 million stable jobs to mention but a few,” he added.

The African Continental Free Trade Area, signed in Kigali, Rwanda in March 2018 and came into effect on Jan.1, 2021, is the largest free trade area in the world by the number of participating countries.

It encompasses a market of over 1.3 billion people, with a combined GDP estimated to reach $3.4 trillion by 2030.

This ambitious initiative seeks to promote intra-African trade, foster economic diversification, create jobs, and ultimately improve the standard of living for millions of Africans. (NAN)

Social media tools becoming weapons of mass destruction – Don

Social Media tools are becoming weapons of mass destruction in the hands of youths, Associate Professor Desmond Okocha, Dean, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Bingham University, has said.

Okocha made the remark in a keynote address at a symposium to mark the UNESCO 2023 Global Media and Information Literacy Day on Wednesday in Abuja.

The symposium has the theme: “Youth, MIL, Digital Space, and Nigeria’s Transformation”.

According to Okocha, how the youths use digital media is very crucial to the future of the country.

While noting that the youths make up 70 per cent of Nigeria’s population, he said the group had become consistently vulnerable with the volume of information they get and share via social media every minute.

He said that the widening usage of digital media had come with the challenge of fake news hence the need for digital media literacy to ensure decorum in its usage.

He pointed out that social media tools such as Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook had great potential for fast national growth.

Unfortunately, he noted, the same tools could also be used to bring down a nation.

He said that digital media, if well used, could curb misinformation and become a huge pillar for national bonding and cultural rejuvenation.

He suggested that people hurling fake news be penalised to deter others from doing the same.

Okocha emphasised the need to teach youths to use their data more positively to restore hope and mobilise Nigerians to push the nation toward greatness.

In his speech, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, said that the need for media information literacy had become very important in view of the increasing role of digital media in human lives.

“Today, we live in a rapidly evolving digital age, finding ourselves in an era where information flows freely and effortlessly.

“While the advantages are enormous, the digital revolution has also given rise to an era where people are more vulnerable to misinformation and disinformation which threaten the very fabric of our society.

“The prevalence of misinformation has taken a toll on our country and continues to pose a serious threat to our collective existence as a nation.

“It also poses a threat to the smooth operation of our democratic structures and ethos.

“Disinformation has equally eroded trust in institutions and fueled social divisions.

“It leads to violence and has become a tool in the hands of desperate and unscrupulous people to determine our world while hiding under the guise of freedom of information,” he said.

The minister, who was represented by Mrs Comfort Aiiboye, Director, ICT, thanked UNESCO for recognising the dire consequences of fake news and other aspects of disinformation to the world.

He commended UNESCO for taking bold steps to commence the process of articulating a set of global guidelines for regulating digital platforms.

“This is indeed commendable and we eagerly await its finalization and eventual implementation by member states,” he said.

Idris expressed optimism that the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) holds the answer to numerous concerns of stakeholders.

He said that MIL was essential for building limitless opportunities that the internet and digital spaces provide.

“MIL teaches us to create our content and share it in a responsible and ethical way,” he said.

He urged stakeholders to work together to overcome all challenges and attain the set goal of media and information literacy for all.

Noting that Nigeria is home to one of the largest youth populations on earth, he said young people were the nation’s greatest assets.

`Clearly, harnessing their potential would unlock the nation’s vast economic and social potential,” he said.

He said that the Federal Government was working with UNESCO and other relevant partners to integrate MIL into the nation’s educational system and also train journalists and other professionals on their roles in national growth.

Earlier, Mr Osamuadiamwen David, Representative of Media and Information Literacy Coalition of Nigeria, had said that MIL was a weapon against misinformation.

“With the rapidly changing media space, we must critically assess how information content is used and unite to tackle the challenges associated with that,” he said.

Proffer ways to end challenges militating against scheme-NYSC D-G urges Inspectors

NYSC tasks inspectors on ways to end challenges militating against scheme-

The Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has urged NYSC Inspectors in the South-South Zone to proffer ways to ending challenges militating against the operations of the scheme.

Ahmed made the call on Monday at the 2023 Inspectors Development Programme (IDP) organised for NYSC inspectors in the South-South.

The theme for the programme which held in Asaba, Delta, was: “Enhancing the Capability and Competence of the NYSC Inspectors For Optimum Productivity”.

In the D-G’s keynote address read by Mr Ladan Baba, NYSC Director, South-South Area Office, he said that the IDP was designed for NYSC Officers within the Inspectorate cadre to build their capacity and competences in the discharge of their duties.

“Over the years, the IDP has proven to be very effective as each of the editions has continuously produced sets of more dedicated and informed inspectors as amply demonstrated in the quality of their output.

“The 2023 edition of the IDP is targeted at inspectors employed in year 2022 and those who have not been opportune to participate in any IDP in their careers as Inspectors.

“The 2023 edition of the programme is also significant as it is coming at a time when the scheme is celebrating 50 years of establishment.

“The scheme is now poised to look beyond the achievements of the last fifty years through the adoption of innovations in its operations.

“The 2023 IDP theme was chosen with the aim of looking into the future and how NYSC would continue to evolve irrespective of any challenges to become the leading light of youth organizations in Africa.

“Notwithstanding the challenges militating against our operations, we, the operators of the scheme, must be ready to evolve ways and means of surmounting those challenges.

“Inspector are also to remember that as field officers, you are mentors, role models and a locus parentis to the corps members,” Ahmed said.

Prof. Robert Dode, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics and Research, Dennis Osadebe University, during his paper presentations, urged the inspectors to be open minded as leaders of change.

“Forge consensus through partnerships and think the wellbeing of NYSC, the teeming youths and Nigeria.

“You, as staff of NYSC, are agents of development and productivity. That you are here suggests to me that your organisation value you as established leaders and up-coming leaders.

“In our respective offices, let us build a public service that can deliver on specific organisational and state mandate. Yes, here at NYSC, you can do it,” he said.

Mr Ladan Baba, NYSC Director, South-South Area Office, urged the participants to listen attentively to the papers packaged so as to be properly groomed to carry out their jobs without any hitches.

“The major Cader of the NYSC is the inspectorate Cader, since inception of the scheme, inspectors were trained on the rudiments of the job at the grassroots.

“We will ensure that the inspectors within the South-South Area office were armed to carry out their job diligently.

“The inspectors should ensure that they get the challenges and liaise appropriately with the appropriate government establishment to ensure that their job is carried out at the grassroots level,” he said (NAN)(nannews.com.ng)
