Amupitan Pledges to Uphold Electoral Integrity


Abuja: Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has pledged to uphold integrity, transparency, and discipline in the management of Nigeria’s electoral process. Amupitan made the pledge during his first meeting with directors of the commission in Abuja on Thursday, emphasizing that the integrity of the electoral system is not negotiable.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Amupitan assured the directors of his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and discipline across all operations. He stressed that INEC has a constitutional responsibility and statutory mandate to deliver free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian people. Describing his appointment as divine, Amupitan expressed his belief that he is at INEC for a purpose, stating that he feels guided by a higher power to ensure that a new Nigeria is birthed.



Amupitan further emphasized the need for collaboration and teamwork among INEC staff members, leveraging each other’s unique skills and expertise to improve the electoral process. He noted that the upcoming Anambra governorship election presents an opportunity for INEC to demonstrate its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections. Amupitan highlighted the importance of restoring voter confidence and addressing voter apathy by ensuring that every voter feels confident that their vote will count.



Accompanied by his wife, children, and officials from the University of Jos, Amupitan also pledged to prioritize the welfare of INEC staff. He stated that staff welfare will be a priority, ensuring that working conditions are conducive and that staff have the necessary resources to excel.



Earlier, the acting chairman of the commission, May Agbamuche-Mbu, congratulated Amupitan on his appointment, describing it as a recognition of his distinguished record as a legal scholar, administrator, and patriot. She emphasized the significance of his appointment at a crucial time, as the commission prepares for the Anambra governorship election. Agbamuche-Mbu acknowledged the innovations introduced under the leadership of Amupitan’s predecessor, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and expressed confidence in Amupitan’s ability to build on the established foundation.



Agbamuche-Mbu reminded Amupitan of the demanding nature of his assignment, emphasizing the need for sacrifice, patience, and dedication. She pledged the commitment and readiness of the commission’s staff members to work with him and expressed her gratitude for the privilege to have served as acting chairman of INEC.
