80 percent of Tanzanians to have internet access by 2025: Minister Nape Nnauye

DAR ES SALAAM— THE government has reiterated its plan to connect Regions, Districts and Villages with the National Fibre optic cable in order to attain the goal of ensuring that 80 percent of Tanzanians have access to internet services come 2025.

 

The Minister for Information, Communications and Information Technology, Nape Nnauye said that the aim is to ensure that citizens benefit from growing digital financial services through electronic means, especially mobile phones.

 

In his statement to the public on commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), Nape said that the government will continue to strengthen fibre optic connection to countries bordering Tanzania to promote the concept and implementation of the collaborative economy.

 

“Connecting all the regions and districts of Tanzania to the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) is well on course where 8,319 kilometres have been covered so far. The aim is to  connect all the Regions, Districts and border areas of the neighboring countries including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi,” Nape explained in the statement.

 

He said that, the goal of facilitating access to Internet services to the members of the public will soon become real as all regions are connected to the national backbone, and the remaining work was to reach the remaining District with reliable Communication infrastructure, more especially with data communication.
