‘November in Namibia’ initiative launched to boost intra-African connections

A group of 21 Ghanaian tourists arrived in the country on Sunday for the ‘November in Namibia’ tourism and business pilot initiative.

The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation in a media statement on Friday said the initiative aims to develop Namibia’s tourism industry within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area and ‘The Africa We Want’ agenda.

The initiative is also part of the memorandum of understanding on tourism between Namibia and Ghana, signed in April 2022 in Accra.

The initiative aims to create a network of African enthusiasts who are passionate about intra-African trade.

Former Ghanaian Ambassador to Namibia, Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Harruna Attah, while speaking to the media at the Hosea Kutako International Airport upon arrival on Sunday, said the group consists of professionals such as medical doctors, entertainers, bankers, legal professionals, and business people.

‘This is a people-to-people kind of visit. I know your country has a policy of getting closer to
Ghana and us getting closer to you, when I was ambassador that was what I was doing,’ he noted.

He stated that the trip was marketed on the premise that Namibia is a prime destination. He also mentioned that many people mistakenly believe that America and Europe are the ideal holiday destinations.

‘We are opening the door a little wider so that our compatriots can come in and see what you have here, in turn also to interest Namibians to see what we have in Ghana and the ECOWAS sub-region,’ Attah said.

Dr Adrian Oddoye, a member of the group, expressed similar feelings, saying they are not only in the country to visit, but also to connect with people who share common interests.

The group, on a 10-day visit, will explore the coast and various parts of the country where wildlife and business attractions are located.

Uutoni hands over 50 houses at Omuthiya

Minister of Urban and Rural Development (MURD), Erastus Uutoni, handed over 50 houses constructed by the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) at Omuthiya in the Oshikoto region on Monday.

The construction of the houses commenced in July 2022 to October 2023, giving employment to 48 contractors.

Utoni during the handover encouraged the nation to appreciate the government’s efforts in developing the country and not only focus on the negative.

‘People should be frank and take their time and analyse what the government is doing as it is something very praiseworthy.

I am happy that the local authority is trying its best to ensure that land is provided and for the financial institutions that are coming in to support,’ he said.

The minister further encouraged civil servants to make use of the 20 per cent housing and transport allowance that was recently added to their salaries to buy houses.

Both the local authorities and NHE are part of the same government serving the same people, and striving to achieve the sa
me vision, he noted while calling on local authorities to help people so they make life easy for them and develop the country.

NHE board chairperson, Toska Sem, said that they are ushering the 50 houses to lucky families as the NHE is mandated to build and finance quality and affordable housing products for Namibian inhabitants.

She urged local authorities in the country to support NHE in allocating affordable land to the Enterprise.

Maria Hannes, representing the beneficiaries, said that she is very excited to own a house after so many years of renting.

‘I am very tired of renting so I am very grateful to my NHE salesperson for giving me a house that I have been longing for,’ said Hannes.

Ministry of Mines and Energy concerned over sale of licenses

The Ministry of Mines and Energy on Monday cautioned individuals and entities that are selling licences and certificates issued by the ministry, indicating that they are doing so in contravention of the law as they are non-transferable.

‘The ministry has observed with deep concern the proliferation of advertisements on social media platforms wherein individuals or entities are offering to sell wholesale fuel licences and retail fuel licences and are marketing fuel at prices not officially gazetted, often from locations lacking the necessary licensing,’ said Bryan Eiseb, the ministry’s acting executive director.

‘It is crucial to inform and remind the public that the Ministry of Mines and Energy is responsible for regulating the distribution of petroleum products, specifically petrol and diesel, with the petroleum downstream sector.’

Eiseb noted that the ministry’s regulatory oversight is governed by the Petroleum Products and Energy Amendment Act of 2000 and the Petroleum Products Regulations of 2000.

Th
e ministry issues the fuel retail and licence that permits the operation of a fuel retail outlet and the fuel wholesale licences that authorise business operations as a wholesaler.

The ministry further issues the fuel consumer installation certificate, which Eiseb said is required for commercial or industrial enterprises, legal farming activities, or mining operations.

‘It is important to emphasise that, as stipulated in regulation 29(1)(2), fuel wholesale licences, fuel retail licences and fuel installation certificates are non-transferable and therefore cannot be offered for sale,’ he explained.

Eiseb further noted that the pricing of petrol and diesel is regulated under the Petroleum Products and Energy Act and that prices are regularly updated and officially published in the monthly government gazette.

‘We strongly urge those engaging in such activities to immediately cease their unlawful practices,’ Eiseb pleaded.

Poor hygiene practices a major contribution to epidemic diseases: Muinjangue

A total of 6517 cases of Hepatitis E were reported in Namibia since December 2017, from which 55 lives were lost since the outbreak started.

According to Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Esther Muinjangue, poor hygiene practices are a major contributor to this disease and many more in Southern Africa and the World at large.

Muinjangue was speaking during the first commemoration of World Toilet Day in Namibia since its establishment by the World Toilet Organisation in 2002 and since it was made official by the United Nations Observance in 2013.

‘On average more than half of the Namibian population practices open defection, which causes negative effects on public health, particularly children’s health and pregnant women.

According to the District Health Information System 2, during the reporting year October 2022 to October 2023, the Erongo Region has reported 1334 cases of diarrhoea with blood, with four deaths recorded, of which one was under five years (of age) and three were above 18 year
s,’ she revealed.

The deputy minister added that the region reported 19 958 cases of diarrhoea without blood, with no death, noting that this is an alarming situation which needs an urgent solution on water, sanitation and hygiene.

Muinjangue stressed that on average more than half of the Namibian population practices open defection, which causes negative effects on public health, particularly children’s health and pregnant women.

The deputy minister has expressed her confidence in the Namibia Water and Sanitation Sector Programme, along with other development partners to find solutions to achieve access to adequate sanitation and hygiene for all and to bring an end to open defection in Namibia by 2030.

Speaking at the same occasion, Erongo Governor, Neville Andre-Itope in a speech delivered on his behalf highlighted the need for collaborative efforts in the provision of sanitation and hygiene to Namibians across the board.

‘Our cooperation might have lasting results and the impact might be life-changing
, even saving someone’s life.

Let us invest in infrastructure and sanitation facilities and continue advocating for hygiene education to ensure universal access to safe and affordable drinking water and sanitation,’ he noted.
