MAPUTO– The Mozambican government has authorised the country’s Road Fund to set up three toll gates along the highway from the port city of Beira in central Mozambique to the Zimbabwe border through the provinces of Sofala and Manica.
This 287-kilometre road, which used to be in poor condition, has been undergoing thorough rehabilitation since April 2015 with the work being undertaken by Chinese contactor Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company (AFECC).
It has been a long-stated government policy that owners of vehicles, particularly large trucks, should help pay for the upkeep of roads but so far the only major road on which toll is collected is the Maputo-South Africa motorway, operated by the South African company, TRAC (Trans-Africa Concessions).
Two of the toll gates on the Beira-Zimbabwe road, at Nhamatanda, and at the Vanduzi crossroads, are ready to open. The third will be in Dondo district on a 17-km stretch where the rehabilitation work is not yet complete.
Media reports Wednesday quoted the chairperson of the Road Fund, Angelo Macuacua, as saying he did not know what tariffs will be charged at the toll gates. They will be fixed jointly by the Ministers of Public Works and of Finance.
