SOUTH AFRICAN REVENUE SERVICE MAKES MAJOR HEORIN BUST AT BORDER WITH MOZAMBIQUE

PRETORIA, South African Customs have arrested a pedestrian at the South Africa-Mozambique border post in Mpumalanga Province for trying to enter the country with 3.6 kilogrammes of heroin, estimated to be worth 3.6 million Rand (about 292,600 US dollars).

The woman was discovered with the drugs by Customs officials from the South African Revenue Services (SARS), together with the detector dog unit, at the Lebombo border post on Wednesday.

The incident happened when the [woman] with two backpacks was walking through the vehicle lane. Upon being searched, heroin was found concealed in false compartments with two plastic [bags] containing an off-white crystal-like substance that reacted positive to tests, said SARS in a statement here Thursday.

The goods were detained and handed over to South African Police Service for further investigation.

SARS said the successful operation was the result of co-operation between SARS and SAPS, who remain committed to protecting the borders and facilitating legitimate trade.
