Senate Confirms Amupitan as New INEC Chairman


Abuja: The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), succeeding Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served as chairman for a decade.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the upper chamber approved Amupitan’s confirmation during a plenary session after extensive screening by the lawmakers. The appointment marks a significant transition in the leadership of the electoral body, with expectations for continued progress and integrity in the electoral process.



In his presentation to the Senate, Amupitan, a legal expert from Kogi and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, expressed his commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies, such as the National Identity Management Commission, to enhance the electoral process. His leadership is anticipated to bring a renewed focus on transparency and efficiency in elections across the nation.
