Security situation seen as stable – General Nunda

Luanda – The chief of the General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), general Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda, said Monday in Luanda that “the security situation in the country is stable”, despite the scenario of Economic crisis, due to the drop in the oil price in the international market.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 3rd meeting of the Angola/South Africa Defense Committee, the general said that Angola has several challenges, being key the overcoming of the crisis, so as to maintain economic growth rates.

The general said that the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) are in a rebuilding process to adapt their organic structure to the future missions, emphasizing that they adopt a new territorial division and modernize the respective equipment and armament.

In addition to their traditional missions to ensure respect for constitutional order and to safeguard democratic institutions, he said, FAA are also tasked to support major government actions, such as demining the country, maintaining communication channels and participating in campaigns against endemic diseases.

He also considered historical the ties of cooperation with South Africa in the military field, stressing that since the first years of the country’s independence, with President Agostinho Neto, it was said that in Namibia and in South Africa South was the continuation of the struggle.

General Nunda argued that the deep political sense and strategic vision contained in this sentence called for the total liberation of the African Continent and the emancipation and freedom of its peoples, marked an important step in relations between the two countries.

He stressed that this relationship was further cemented basing on the goals determined by African leaders in the constitution of the African Union, on the basis of which Angola has maintained solidarity, contributing to the different regional organizations to which it is part of, for peace and security on the mainland.

It also contributed to the guarantee of democracy, economic and social development and the well-being of African peoples, he stressed.

The 3rd meeting of the Angola and South Africa Defense Committee will take place until March 15 in Luanda. The 2nd meeting of the Defense Committee was held in Rustenburg, Republic of South Africa.
