Ruling MPLA presidential candidate defends preservation of heritage, conquests

Luanda – The presidential candidate of the ruling MPLA for the 2017 general elections, JoAPound o Lourenco, last Saturday defended the need to preserve the country’s accumulated heritage and the conquests made by the nation’s founder, Antonio Agostinho Neto, and the second and current president of Angola, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, with a view to building a better and prosperous country.

“We’ll use those conquests as springboards, pillars or necessary bases for the improvement of the living of Angolans”, said JoAPound o Lourenco, who is also the ruling party’s vice president.

The politician was delivering a speech at a rally held in Luanda, which served for him to present himself as presidential candidate to the electorate of this province. The elections are scheduled to take place in August.

In his opinion, to build a better future and a better Angola means greater supply of essential goods and services to the population, more infrastructures, housing and health services.

“Amid all this, I highlight the problem with infrastructures, the restructuring of our neighbourhoods and cities. These are things that have already been done and we’ll continue with this after next August”, he emphasised.

However, JoAPound o Lourenco reminded people that continuity will only be possible if the party wins the trust of the electorate, which means winning the upcoming general elections.

According to the country’s electoral system, the first name on the list that each party or coalition presents with the candidates for members of parliament is also that organisation’s presidential candidate.

On 03 February 2017, the Central Committee of the ruling MPLA held a session, chaired by the party’s president, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, in which JoAPound o Lourenco was confirmed as the head of the MPLA list of candidates for members of parliament, thus becoming also its presidential candidate.

In view of this, JoAPound o Lourenco has been travelling throughout the country presenting himself and speaking to the party militants, and the electorate in general, about his ideas for the country.

He has already been to the provinces of Huila (south), Lunda Norte (north-east) and Bie (centre).
