NYUSI WARNS OF EFFORTS TO THWART EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE EFFECTIVE PEACE IN MOZAMBIQUE

MURRUPULA, MOZAMBIQUE, President Filipe Nyusi has called on Mozambicans to remain vigilant against opportunists who are seeking to undermine efforts to achieve an effective peace in the country.

Speaking at a rally in Cazuzu, in the northern province of Nampula on Thursday, Nyusi said although the dialogue with Renamo, the rebel movement which is also the biggest opposition party in parliament, was advancing, there could exist opportunists who might try to create difficulties, giving the impression that no progress was being made in the talks between the government and Renamo.

The true promoter of peace is the Mozambican people, Nyusi said, and for that reason all Mozambicans are called upon to make their contribution to restore effective peace, as the basic condition for development.

Recalling the recent low-level Renamo insurrection, Nyusi said Morrupula lived through attacks which caused deaths and disturbed the free movement of people”.

However the district was now living through a moment of calm with the cessation of hostilities, he noted. “Even so, I am not yet satisfied, because we need to live in absolute peace, he added.

Mozambicans cannot live in setbacks and fear. The opportunists are among us. The efforts to seek peace are not the task solely of the President, but of everybody. We are doing what the people want to be done.”
