NO DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT PEACE, STRESSES MOZAMBIQUE’S PRESIDENT NYUSI

“Without peace, we cannot concentrate on production,’ Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has declared.

Addressing a picnic at the national sports stadium in the Maputo neighbourhood of Zimpeto on Sunday, Nyusi said there was no justification for spending money on war when the major challenge facing the country was to increase production.

The independent daily O Pais on Monday quoted Nyusi as saying that “with political instability, we are wasting our energies which could be pooled to promote development, and to produce food, which could drive exports, make the country competitive and earn foreign exchange”.

Nyusi stressed that the clashes between gunmen of the rebel movement Renamo and government forces did not mean a lack of love among Mozambicans, and he urged members of Renamo’s illicit militia to lay down their guns. Renamo is also the main opposition political party in the country.

He praised the country’s churches for promoting national unity. The religious organizations, he said, had shown themselves loyal to the construction of a single and indivisible Mozambique, on the path to economic, social and cultural development.
