Mozambique: Youth Dies After Police Shooting

A 20 year old youth named Edson Mutembe died on Sunday morning in the southern Mozambican city of Matola after he was shot by a policeman guarding the home of the Maputo provincial police commander, according to a report in Monday’s issue of the independent daily “O Pais”.

The incident happened when Mutembe was leaving a party in a house opposite the police commander’s residence. The police bullet hit Mutembe in the leg, and possibly severed an artery, since he lost so much blood that he died shortly after neighbours took him to the Maputo Provincial Hospital.

His father, Elisio Mutembe, described Edson as peaceful young man, and could scarcely believe what had happened to him.

“My son had no problems with anybody”, he said. “He was very calm. He left the house at 20.00, and said he was going to a party. And this is how the party finished. Now we want justice”.

Infuriated by the police behaviour, local residents burnt tyres in front of the home of the police commander.

So far, there has been no official statement, but “O Pais” learnt that the policeman who fired the fatal shot has been detained.
