Mozambique: Three Charged With Murder of Senior Attorney

The Mozambican Attorney-General’s Office (PGR) announced on Monday night that three people have been arrested in connection with the assassination, on 11 April, of prominent attorney Marcelino Vilanculo.

Vilanculo was shot dead by unidentified assailants outside his home, in the southern city of Matola, as he was returning from his work in the Maputo city attorney’s office. The killers put three bullets in Vilanculo’s head.

The team set up to investigate the crime has identified three suspects, all of whom are now under arrest. The PGR statement did not release the names of the suspects, but said they are being charged with first degree murder, criminal conspiracy, and the illicit possession of firearms.

Two of the accused are also charged with money laundering. The statement gave no further details, but presumably this is connected with the crimes that Vilanculo was investigating at the time of his murder.

Since there are signs that others may have been involved in the assassination, the PGR is continuing its investigations in the hope of bringing all the murderers to justice.

Vilanculo handled many sensitive cases – including that of Danish Satar, accused of involvement in the wave of kidnappings of business people, usually of Asian descent, which has plagued Mozambican cities since late 2011. The kidnappings are a lucrative business, with ransoms running into millions of dollars.
