Mozambique: President Inaugurates Bridge Over Luco River

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday inaugurated a bridge over the Luco River in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

The new bridge will link the village of Bilibiza in Chiure district with the town of Namogelia in Namuno district.

The construction of the bridge began in November 2014 and created employment for 203 workers.

Addressing a crowd at the opening ceremony, President Nyusi recalled that during a visit to the district in 2009 he was informed about the need for a bridge to allow traffic to flow during the rainy season. He proudly stated that “today, the bridge is here”.

The district administrator of Chiure, JoAPound o da Silva Nqueca, that the bridge was not only a benefit to the district but also to the entire province. He stated that “Namogelia is the granary of the district and this bridge will facilitate the transportation of products such as cotton, maize, beans, cassava and sesame”.

According to a resident of Bilibiza, Manuel Severiano, many lives were lost trying to cross the river during the rainy season when people tried to canoe or swim across to the other side.

The administrative post of Namugelia has 40,000 residents whilst 15,000 people live in Bilibiza.
