Mozambican President Felipe Nyusi welcomed today Cuban State Council Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa, with whom he held a friendly meeting in this capital.

Valdes Mesa, who began a two-day official visit to this African country, returned the warm greeting and passed on a friendly message from Cuban President Raul Castro.

Valdes Mesa, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Cuban Communist Party, expressed his gratitude for the stance by Maputo in favour of lifting the economic and trade blockade of Cuba by the United States for more than 50 years.

Asked by the news agency Prensa Latina after his exchange with Nyusi and then with Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, he said they reaffirmed the willingness to work for the future.

‘We are continuing an existing program in several areas, including education, health, sports and others, and the prospect is to extend that collaboration,’ he remarked.

Valdes Mesa arrived in Mozambique, coming from South Africa, on a tour that also included Ethiopia, where besides paying an official visit, he represented Cuba, a guest to the 28th Summit of Heads of State and Government from the African Union, held in Addis Ababa, from Jan 30-31.
