MOZAMBICAN PRESIDENT URGES MEMBERS OF HIS RULING FRELIMO PARTY TO LISTEN TO OPPOSING IDEAS

MAPUTO, Members of Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party have been urged to listen to opposing ideas by Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, who is also the party’s president.

Speaking in his capacity as President of Frelimo, Nyusi was visiting the Maputo provincial headquarters of the party, in the southern city of Matola, as part of the preparation for the 11th Congress of Frelimo, scheduled for September.

The independent daily O Pais quoted Nyusi as striking a conciliatory note when he declared that in Mozambique there are no enemies, but only “brothers”, who should learn to solve problems on the basis of dialogue, and in peace and harmony. Reconciliation, he stressed, should always form part of the life of Mozambicans.

“Let us continue in this way, all together, and tolerant. There are no enemies in Mozambique. We are all brothers. It is necessary to hear the opinion of others, and not provoke war with anyone,” he told party members.

Nyusi re-affirmed that the top priority, not only for Frelimo members, but for all Mozambicans, should be food production. He said advantage should be taken of the rain that had fallen recently in Maputo, to increase production, at a time when the country is still heavily dependent on foreign aid.
