The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Regulation (EU) No 2015/870,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas, in July 2015, the European Union’s Scientific Review Group decided to deliver an unfavourable opinion on the importation of African elephant hunting trophies from Tanzania and Mozambique;

B.     whereas the Scientific Review Group also delivered an unfavourable opinion on the importation of trophies from Zambia;

C.     whereas, however, these bans are not permanent and they apply only to the three above-mentioned countries;

D.     whereas poaching seriously threatens the survival of African elephants and sustains trafficking in trophies;

E.     whereas the elephant population in Tanzania has fallen by a dramatic 63% in five years, from 109 000 individuals to the current 43 000;

1.      Calls on the Commission to introduce a general and definitive ban on the importation of elephant trophies into the European Union;

2.      Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
