Lunda Sul: CAT-E42 mine produces over one million carats

Saurimo – Catoca Mining Company’s CAT-E42 diamond mine, with an annual capacity to produce more than one million carats, whose prospecting began in 2004, was inaugurated today by the minister of Geology and Mines, Francisco Queiroz.

The mining project, located seven kilometers from the Catoca mine, will be exploited up to 150 meters deep and has an annual productivity of more than one million carats and reserves in the order of five million and 500 thousand tons of ore.

According to Catoca planning officer, Romulo Mucase, who was speaking to the press at the time, the project, with a four-year shelf life, occupies an area of five hectares and created more than 50 jobs.

He pointed out as possible constraints, the proximity of the river Luiti, which could influence the production phase, as well as limiting the depth of the mine and the lifetime of the chimney.

“With the technical means available, we will do everything possible to reverse the situation, and I think we will have the first E-42 CAT diamonds between May and June of this year,” he said.

He underlined in this context that the CAT E-42 mine follows a strategy led by Endiama to increase the national diamond reserve.
