LESS THAN 10 PCT OF THOSE EMPLOYED IN SOUTH AFRICA’S AVIATION INDUSTRY ARE WOMEN

CAPE TOWN — Women make up only about 10 per cent of people employed in the aviation industry in South Africa and the government says it is unacceptable that less than 10 per cent of pilot’s licence holders in the country are women.

This trend has continued despite policies being put in place aimed at empowering women to take up careers in the sector and the issue is being discussed at the first Global Aviation Gender Summit now underway in Cape Town.

South Africa’s aviation industry has been described as painstakingly slow to transform with men still dominating most of the technical careers from pilots to engineers.

The government says part of the problem stems from poor gate-keeping at aviation academies.
