Rome – The Angolan ambassador to Italy, FlorAncio de Almeida, reiterated the solidarity of the Government to the Western Sahara people.

The diplomat was speaking during a campaign of support promoted by the Italian Inter-parliamentary Group for Friendship with the Saharawi People.

Invited by the Italian Parliamentary Group, the Angolan diplomat said Angola recognised the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic in 1976 and defends since then its right to self- determination and independence.

It is based on this principle that the Angolan Government granted diplomatic Status to this Arab Republic, said the ambassador.

During the event that took place on Monday 16 at Italian Senate under the motto Saharawi, what perspective?, the Angolan ambassador added that the Saharawi Republic is an African Union member country, the reason why Angola remains consistent with the principles that led to the admission of Western Sahara into this continental institution.

In his final address, the Angolan diplomat reiterated the Angolan position based on seeking diplomatic solutions to the Saharawi issue and the volunteer return of Morocco to the African Union, as long as the Sahara Republic does not be penalised.

Finally, a political declaration was adopted and signed by all the participants who recommended its subscription by the Italian MPs, with a view to its submission to the European Parliament and to the UN secretary.

The participants expressed their full support for the self-determination and independence of the Saharawi people and appealed to Morocco government to facilitate the referendum set by the United Nations.
