ASABA, NIGERIA– Four Kenyan athletes will seek to defend their titles when the 21st African Senior Athletics Championship begins in Asaba, Nigeria, on Wednesday.
Kenya will be represented by a 64-member squad at the five-day championships which will see an array of track and field stars from the continent converging in Asaba. Kenya has set its sights on reclaiming the overall title for the first time in eight years.
Leading Kenya’s charge will be high jumper Mathew Sawe, women’s 10,000 metres runner Alice Aprot, and 20-km walk athletes Grace Wanjiru and Samuel Gathimba, who will all be out to defend their respective individual titles which they won at the previous championships held in Durban, South Africa, in 2016.
Kenya’s medal hopes will also be pegged on world 3,000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, 1,500m world champion Elijah Manangoi, Olympic and world 3,000m steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto, world 5,000m champion Hellen Obiri and two time African javelin champion Julius Yego.
Kenya last topped the medals table of the African championships in 2010.
