Makurdi: Ms Member Adiguve, State Coordinator of the Young Women in Politics Forum in Benue, has called for increased participation of women in politics, encouraging them to aim for higher positions beyond the traditional roles of women leaders.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Adiguve emphasized the importance of women aspiring to occupy all positions within their political parties and government. She highlighted the Forum’s efforts in conducting extensive public enlightenment campaigns across the 23 local government areas of the state to educate women on the importance of active political participation. Furthermore, Adiguve mentioned that the Forum is advocating for the complete implementation of the 35 percent affirmative action for women in the state.
The Forum is also closely monitoring a current bill before the National Assembly that seeks to reserve seats for women in elective positions. Adiguve noted that once the bill is enacted, the Forum intends to lobby for its domestication in the state.
Mrs. Elizabeth Achagh, Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Benue Chapter, also urged for greater involvement of women in decision-making processes to enhance their contribution to the country’s development. Achagh remarked on the vital role women play in nation-building, citing examples of notable women leaders such as the late Dr. Dora Akunyili, Oby Ezekwesili, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
She expressed concern over the declining participation and representation of women in Nigerian politics, stating that this trend is detrimental to a nation that claims leadership in Africa. Achagh advocated for the ‘Her-seat in Parliament’ bill, describing it as a strategic measure to promote an inclusive society where women can actively participate in decision-making.
