Ethiopia: Foreign minister in Addis Ababa for AU Ordinary Session

Addis Ababa – Angolan Foreign Minister Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti arrived Wednesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the 29th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), scheduled for 3 and 4 July.

Prior to the conference, the Angolan top diplomat will attend the 31st AU Executive Council, on 30 June – 1 July.

The two events were preceded by the 34th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (ambassadors), held between 27 and 28 June.

The summit, going under the theme “Exploit advantages of demographic dividend through Investing in Youth”, will be marked by the elections of the AU Commissioners for Economic Affairs and Human Resources, Science and Technology, who have not been elected at the 28th Summit.

The participants will also elect the members of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).

For the ACHPR, Angola presented the candidacy of Manuela Maria Teresa.

At the previous summit, also held in Addis Ababa, another Angolan woman, Josefa Sacko, was elected Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union.

The summit is expected to approve the AU budget for 2018.

Angola is the fifth largest contributor, after South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Algeria.
