Defence minister highlights pragmatism of Head of State in peace conquest

National Defense Minister JoAPound o Lourenco on Tuesday, in Caala Municipality, central Huambo Province, highlighted the pragmatism shown by the Angolan President, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, in the conquest and consolidation of peace.

JoAPound o Lourenco was speaking on behalf of the Angolan Head of State at the central event of the 15th anniversary of April 4th, National Peace and Reconciliation Day, held in Caala Municipality.

He highlighted the strong will of Angolans, faithfully interpreted by the President of the Republic, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, in eliminating the word enemy from our dictionary and returning the true meaning of the word brother and compatriot that never ceased to exist in the minds of the Angolans.

The Cabinet minister emphasised that this fact led to talks between high ranked officers of the Angolan Armed Forces and the then military forces of UNITA, on April 4, 2002, witnessed by the diplomatic corps accredited in Angola, which culminated with the signing of an agreement that put an end to military hostilities in this country.

JoAPound o Lourenco also highlighted the role played by civil society, especially the church, thus allowing 4 April to become the second most important festive of Angolans after national independence.

He said that just like the National Independence date, April 4 is the day of all Angolans, regardless of their religious or political belief, since everyone can celebrate this together.

He said that in the past 15 years the country has been achieving many gains with the peace, such the recovery of infrastructures, greater supply of goods, free movement of people and goods, among others.
