CHINESE DEFENCE MINISTER IN MOZAMBIQUE

MAPUTO, Chinese Minister of Defence Chang Wanquan has arrived in Maputo for a visit to Mozambique as part of a three-nation African tour which also includes stops in Kenya and Angola.

Chang, who arrived here Monday, is scheduled to hold discussions with his Mozambican counterpart, Salvador M’tumuke, to review the state of bilateral cooperation.

The Chinese Minister will also lay a wreath at Maputo’s Monument to the Mozambican Heroes, and visit the headquarters of the General Staff of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM).

China is one of Mozambique most important investors. Just over a year ago, Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi visited China where he encouraged Chinese companies to continue to invest in Mozambique, particularly in agriculture, energy, tourism and infrastructure, which he described as strategic catalysts for the local economy.

Last year Chinese companies signed contracts for construction projects in Mozambique valued at 8.5 billion US dollars.
