BRITISH FIRM REARING CATTLE, GOATS IN MOZAMBIQUE PLANS TO BEGIN EXPORT MEAT TO EUROPE IN 2018

MAPUTO, The British-owned company Mozbife, which is processing cattle and goats in the central Mozambican province of Manica, plans to begin exporting meat to Europe this year, according to a report aired by the independent television station, STV.

Mozbife currently supplies meat to the Mozambican domestic market and China. Its expansion plans target first the South African market, and then the European Union (EU), says Mozbife supervisor Frederico Rebelo.

He told STV that the exports to China are exclusively made up of hides. To date, meat has been sold only within Mozambique, but the company plans to change this with investments in new equipment, and in improving the quality of the final product.

In the processing and preservation of the meat, we are guaranteeing observation of the recommended temperatures. We prepare various cuts of meat, and other derivatives, such as sausages and hamburgers, said Rebelo.

On average, Mozbife slaughters 250 head of cattle a week, which provides 45 tonnes of meat. Mozbife purchases the cattle, mostly from livestock farmers in Manica.
