MAPUTO� A massive power cut hit all of central and northern Mozambique as well as some parts of Zimbabwe and South Africa on Tuesday night following a serious breakdown at the Cahora Bassa power station, southern Africa’s biggest power project.
The hydro-power station, with an installed capacity of 5X415 megawatts, or 2,075 MW, is located on the Zambezi River in Songo, in Tete Province in northwestern Mozambique, near the borders with the two neighbouring countries.
Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), the company which operates the hydro-power station, said in a statement here Wednesday that the breakdown resulted from an unforeseen disturbance that occurred in the work currently underway to modernize the servers of the system that controls the company’s generator groups.
A technical team from the manufacturer of the equipment, United States multinational General Electric, has been working on modernizing the servers.
HCB said that as soon as the breakdown occurred, teams were mobilized to restore the power supply. The power was flowing again about five hours after the incident.
