Basketball: Specialist deems decision to host Afrobasket2017 difficult

Luanda – The sports pundit Antonio da Luz said last Monday in Luanda that the decision that has recently been taken by the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) to host, on 19 to 30 August this year, the Africa Cup of Nations (Afrobasket2017) is a difficult one.

The difficulty mentioned by the pundit to ANGOP, in face of FIBA-Africa’s acceptance of Angola’s bid to host Afrobasket2017, is due to the fact that it is an international competition and the expenses for such undertaking have not been included in the present State Budget.

He said the preparation of such an event in the four months left before the date will imply the need for the doubling of efforts by the government and other institutions.

He went on to say that although the hosting of such event elevates the name of the country, it is supposed to be preceded by several studies, due to organisational factors, which includes sorting out aspects relating to transport, hotels, the venues for the games, among other aspects.

However, he thinks it necessary to hear the position of the federation, since there may be sponsors willing to support the initiative.

This is going to be the fourth time the country will host such senior males basketball continental competition, after doing so in 1989, 1999 and 2007.

Afrobasket2017 will be disputed by Nigeria (defending champions), Angola, Morroco, Tunisia, Mali, Senegal, CAte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Uganda, Mozambique and South Africa.

Guinea and Rwanda have also received invitation (wild card) to participate.

Afrobasket 2017 was going to be disputed in the Republic of Congo, however this country has quit due to logistical problems.
