Basketball: Angola to host Afrobasket2017

Luanda – Angola will host in this year the African Cup of National in basketball (Afrobasket2017) on 19-30 August, replacing the Republic of Congo, FIBA Africa announced on its website.

The decision on the selection of the new host was made after a meeting in Bamako between the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) and the FIBA Africa Council.

This will be the third time that the country will host this competition, after having hosted it in 1989, 1999 and 2007.

The event will count on the participation of 16 teams, including the current champions Nigeria, Angola, Morocco, Tunisia, Mali, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Uganda, Mozambique and South Africa. Guinea and Rwanda also received invitations (wild card) to participate in this edition.

An additional wild card will also be awarded for a team that will replace the Republic of Congo.

The Republic of Congo has pointed out the logistical issues as the reason for its inability to host the competition.
