AU: Angola continues campaigning for continental posts

Addis Ababa – The Angolan delegation to the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) will promote a luncheon on Friday with continental ministers, in the framework of the country’s bid to have two of its candidates elected to AU posts, namely as commissioner for agriculture and rural economy, and commissioner for political matters.

The information was given last Wednesday to the press, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by the Angolan minister of Foreign Affairs, Georges Chikoti, after having participated in the first day of works of the AU’s Executive Council.

According to the top diplomat, both Josefa Sacko and Tete Antonio the candidates to the above mentioned posts, in that respective order have great chances of full approval.

However, he informed, for such each of them has to defeat at least five other contestants to the post.

ANGOP has learnt that the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) also has a candidate to the post of AU commissioner for agriculture and rural economy, and Wednesday it carried out a campaign-like activity for such aim, in which Angola was present.

Still regarding Angola’s candidacy, the Angolan extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Ethiopia and representative to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has said this is an opportune moment, because the country wants to boost its contribution in terms of policy-making for the continental organisation’s work.

This stresses the importance Angola gives to the work of the AU and we want, with our cadres, to have a more active participation, ambassador Arcanjo do Nascimento declared.

He then assured that the two candidates will serve the continent, on the basis of a continental agenda.

As regards the candidacy of southern Africa to chair the African Union Commission, the Angolan Foreign minister said that the Botswana candidate is not well positioned in this race.

He said according to information Angola has, in this stage, the best positioned candidates come from Chad and Kenya.
