JOHANNESBURG– The Arab and Pan-African Parliaments have both stressed the need for the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) to re-affirm its position rejecting the inclusion of Sudan in the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism compiled by the United States.
They have also called on the PAP to put pressure on the US Administration to drop Sudan from this list, the Algerian People’s National Assembly (lower house of Parliament) said in a statement here Sunday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the PAP bureau held in Midrand, Johannesburg, on Saturday with a visiting delegation of the Arab Parliament, chaired by its Vice-Speaker, Abou Salah Abdu Salam, the statement added.
The meeting, which was held at the initiative of Algerian National Assembly member and a Vice-Speaker of the PAP, Djamel Bouras, focused on the Palestinian cause and participants called the transfer of the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to occupied Al-Quds (Jerusalem) an affront to the dignity of a people that militate for their freedom, the statement added.
Both Parliaments agreed to set up an Arab-African Joint Parliamentary Committee to revive co-operation between African and Arab countries, notably the issues of common interest, common problems in the two regions and the co-ordination of both institutions’ positions on relations with other continental and international institutions.
