Burkina reorganizes its internal security system for greater efficiency

Ouagadougou: The new decree adopted yesterday Wednesday during the council of ministers aims to specify the areas of intervention specific to the police and the gendarmerie, to avoid duplication and to improve the occupation of the land by the internal security services.

According to the government, the national police will now take care of urban communities while the national gendarmerie will take charge of the country’s rural communities.

According to the Minister Delegate in charge of security, Mahamadou Sana, this system will make it possible to avoid duplication at police and gendarmerie checkpoints and to maintain clear responsibility for the security situation in the different areas.

‘The two entities will retain certain advantages in crucial areas such as investigations, interventions by special units, immigration management and the protection of high-ranking personalities,’ Minister Sana said.

He also clarified that territorial responsibility can change depending on criteria such as crime, demogr
aphics and economic factors and that consequently the gendarmerie can intervene in a territory formerly under the jurisdiction of the police and vice versa.

This decree is an important step to optimize the security apparatus and improve public security in the country, the minister said.
