18 PARTIES SUBMIT CANDIDATE LISTS FOR MOZAMBIQUE’S OCTOBER MUNICIAPL ELECTIONS

MAPUTO– Mozambique’s National Elections Commission (CNE) says of the 28 parties, coalitions and citizens’ groups which have indicated their intention of contesting the municipal elections scheduled for Oct 10, 18 have submitted lists of candidates, and two cases are still pending.

Only the three parties represented in the country’s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic — the ruling Frelimo Party, the main opposition party Renamo and the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) — are fielding candidates in all 53 municipalities of the country.

Under the law on municipal elections, parties or groups must present lists with enough candidates to fill all places in the municipal assembly, plus at least three supplementary candidates. This means that in the largest municipality, Maputo City, any party or group hoping to contest the election had to present a list of 67 names.

Parties have had months to prepare their lists and ensure that their candidates have the five documents required but some of them were still compiling their lists at the last moment.
